Clients of mine recently bought a great home and during the inspection mold was found in the attic space. The likely culprit is blocked soffit vents and a slightly disconnected bathroom exhaust duct. Both of these issues are easy fixes -  if you get them before the mold gets started! As a homeowner, make it a habit to stick your head up through the attic access hatch with a flashlight. Check that all the vents are connected and clear. Check the soffit vents by turning off the flashlight and look for light coming up along the roof edge. If you check during a good rain storm, look for water entering leaks. Catching problems early is the key to preventing costly repairs.
